US court orders US to pay $1.6 billion in damages for killing of a woman in Cambodia

In a ruling expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court, a federal appeals court in California has ordered the U.S. to pay the widow of a Cambodian woman killed in a US airstrike last year $1 billion in compensatory damages and costs.

In addition, the court ordered the Justice Department to pay a $500,000 penalty to the family of the woman killed.

In April, the 9th U.N. Human Rights Council ruled Cambodia should pay compensation to the victim’s family, which had demanded the money.
